Kataib Hezbollah threatens Iraq’s PM as disarmament push escalates
Iraqi armed group Kataib Hezbollah accused Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi of pressuring armed factions and threatened retaliatory action under the principle of “an eye for an eye.”
The group set out a number of conditions for negotiations on disarmament. These include the complete withdrawal of US forces from Iraq, the departure of Turkish forces from the country’s north, and the dissolution of the Peshmerga, Caliber.Az reports via Shafaq News.
The escalation comes as Baghdad steps up efforts to bring all weapons under state control ahead of the September 30 deadline set by major political forces. The issue has also gained urgency amid renewed government moves targeting areas and structures linked to armed factions, while Iraqi authorities have continued to stress that any armed activity outside state institutions could face legal action.
The latest developments also follow recent political efforts to prevent the weapons dispute from escalating into an armed confrontation, with some factions backing the government’s approach while others continue to reject disarmament at this stage.
