Kazakh lawmaker urges US pressure on Kyiv over attacks on CPC pipeline VIDEO

14 January 2026 12:11

A Kazakh parliamentarian has called on the United States to exert pressure on Kyiv following Ukrainian attacks on the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) infrastructure.

Aidos Sarym, a member of Kazakhstan’s Mazhilis, cited the involvement of major international energy companies, including Chevron, in the pipeline’s operations, Caliber.Az reports.

“One of the major shareholders is Chevron. Ukraine relies heavily on U.S. support, and Chevron is hardly a minor player. I believe the U.S. and our other partners should jointly encourage Ukraine to reconsider its objectives,” Sarym said.

The comments come after two foreign tankers, chartered by international consortia Tengizchevroil and Karachaganak Petroleum Operating, sustained damage during drone attacks near the CPC terminal.

A tanker chartered by the US energy giant Chevron is now en route to a safe port, the company has said.

Chevron confirmed that all crew members are safe, the vessel remains stable, and oil exports have not been affected. “Chevron continues to monitor the situation closely,” the firm added.

On January 13, Ukrainian drones attacked two oil tankers in the Black Sea, including one chartered by U.S. oil major Chevron, as they sailed toward Russia’s Yuzhnaya Ozereyevka terminal, which handles around 80% of Kazakh oil exports to international markets. Chevron confirmed all crew are safe and the vessel remains stable.

The attacks come amid sharply reduced Kazakh oil output, which fell 35% in early January due to export constraints caused by winter storms, infrastructure damage from prior Ukrainian drone strikes, and limited pipeline capacity. Kyiv has been targeting Russian energy infrastructure, though responsibility for tanker strikes remains unclear.

The Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC), which operates the terminal, continues limited exports via one mooring. Major shareholders include Kazakhstan’s KazMunayGas, Russia’s Lukoil, and U.S. firms Chevron and ExxonMobil.
