Kazakh leader hails President Aliyev’s support in expanding Kazakhstan–EU oil routes

21 May 2025 16:27

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has called for the full use of the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS) to diversify supply chains for oil, gas, uranium, and other goods in high demand on global markets.

Tokayev made the remarks on May 21 during the informal OTS summit in Budapest.

"President Tokayev expressed gratitude to President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev for supporting Kazakhstan’s efforts to increase oil exports to Europe," a statement from the Akorda presidential press service read, per Caliber.Az.

Tokayev also noted that international experts have recently revived discussions around the initiative to construct a Trans-Caspian oil and gas pipeline. He stressed that such large-scale projects require coordinated action at a transnational level.

Among the promising areas of cooperation within the OTS, Tokayev highlighted digitalisation and information technology. He specifically announced that work has begun on laying a fibre-optic cable across the Caspian Sea, which is expected to significantly enhance digital connectivity in the region.

The Kazakh president also drew attention to the need for joint responses to the growing frequency of natural disasters. As an example, he cited the noticeable decline in the Caspian Sea’s water level, which is having a serious negative impact on the environment, regional economies, and quality of life.

"In this regard, he urged the Turkic states to conduct joint research and develop common environmental solutions," the statement emphasised.
