Kazakh president describes China as eternal neighbor, reliable ally

30 September 2025 13:26

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has reaffirmed his country’s deep strategic partnership with China, highlighting shared goals in regional connectivity and economic cooperation.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 7th International Transport and Logistics Business Forum “New Silk Way”, Tokayev underscored the significance of key infrastructure developments and their broader geopolitical impact, Caliber.Az reports.

“We are witnessing the official inauguration of the second line of the Dostyk–Moyinty railway, which is truly an exceptionally important infrastructure project. Without a doubt, it will give a special impetus to the development and increased efficiency of Kazakhstan’s transport and logistics system,” Tokayev stated during the forum.

The president reminded attendees that the original Dostyk-Alashankou railway project began 35 years ago, marking a turning point in regional cooperation.

“The connection of the railways of Kazakhstan and China was a historic event for our country. Veterans who took part in the construction of this railway have been invited to today’s ceremony,” he said, extending heartfelt gratitude to those pioneers.

Reflecting on the broader historical context, Tokayev emphasized Kazakhstan’s enduring role in facilitating East-West connectivity. “Historically, the Great Silk Road passed through Kazakhstan and Central Asia,” he noted. “Kazakh land has long been considered a golden bridge between China and Europe. China is our eternal close neighbor and a reliable ally. We consistently support one another. The relationship between our peoples is built on strong friendship and mutual trust. Our countries share a common vision for the future.”

The president also recalled that China’s flagship Belt and Road Initiative was first announced in Kazakhstan in 2013 by Chinese President Xi Jinping — a moment that further solidified bilateral cooperation.

“We fully support this initiative and actively participate in its implementation, as it fully aligns with the interests of our country. A vivid example of this is the second line of the Dostyk–Moyinty railway,” Tokayev said. “The new railway line will increase freight capacity fivefold. It will reduce delivery times for export goods and strengthen Kazakhstan’s transit potential.”

Looking to the future, Tokayev outlined ambitious plans for Kazakhstan’s railway infrastructure, including the construction of 5,000 kilometres of new railways and the renovation of 11,000 kilometres of existing lines. “Work is currently underway on the Moyinty-Kyzylzhar railroad line. Sections from Kyzylzhar station to the port of Aktau will also be modernized,” he said.

In conclusion, Tokayev emphasized the strategic importance of these projects: “All these measures will strengthen ties between Europe and Asia and provide a powerful boost to the dynamic development of the Trans-Kazakhstan railway route and the Middle Corridor.”
