Kazakhstan begins day of silence ahead of parliamentary vote

Kazakhstan has entered a campaign silence period ahead of the first elections for deputies of the country’s new single-chamber parliament, the Kurultai, with all forms of election campaigning prohibited, Kazakh media reports.
The restrictions are in force on August 22 and 23, covering both the day before the vote and election day itself, in accordance with Kazakhstan’s electoral legislation.
Voting is scheduled for Sunday, August 23. More than 12.6 million citizens have been included on the electoral rolls.
A total of 10,423 polling stations will operate across Kazakhstan, with another 79 polling stations established abroad in 61 countries.
