Kazakhstan cuts gas output at giant Karachaganak field

26 June 2026 10:52

Kazakhstan has reduced natural gas production at its giant Karachaganak field following a drone attack on Russia's Orenburg gas processing plant, Energy Minister Yerlan Akkenzhenov said.

Speaking on the impact of the disruption, Akkenzhenov said production at the Karachaganak field had been cut from 34,000 tonnes to 25,000 tonnes per day, Kazakh media reports.

"As of today, we have been forced to reduce production at the Karachaganak field from 34,000 to 25,000 tonnes," the minister said.

Despite the production cut, Akkenzhenov said Kazakhstan's domestic gas supply remains unaffected, with deliveries to consumers continuing in full.

The Karachaganak field, located in the Burlin District of West Kazakhstan Region near the Russian border, is one of the world's largest oil and gas condensate fields. It is a cornerstone of Kazakhstan's energy sector, with much of its natural gas processed at the Orenburg facility in Russia under a long-standing cross-border arrangement.
