Kazakhstan explores domestic military drone production

23 April 2026 18:04

Kazakhstan is considering launching its own production of military drones, according to statements from the country’s Ministry of Defence, signaling a potential shift toward strengthening domestic defence capabilities.

Deputy Defence Minister Askar Mustabekov told reporters that preliminary agreements have been reached with Turkish defence company Baykar, known for producing the widely used Bayraktar drone systems. The initiative remains in the planning phase, with feasibility studies currently underway, Caliber.Az reports per Kazakh media.

“We have an agreement regarding the Bayraktar. The project is currently being studied. I think this issue will be resolved in the near future,” Mustabekov said during remarks on the sidelines of a Senate session.

He also noted that Kazakhstan is closely observing developments in modern warfare, particularly the widespread use of drones by countries such as the United States, Iran, Ukraine, and Russia. Alongside large unmanned aerial vehicles, smaller drones have proven highly effective in recent conflicts.

Mustabekov confirmed that Kazakhstan is exploring the possibility of producing a range of drones domestically, including smaller tactical systems. However, he emphasised that progress will depend on increased defence spending.

“If funding reaches 1% of GDP, work in this direction will proceed. We have plans, but due to the classified nature of the information, I cannot disclose the details,” he said.
