Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan to exchange embassy sites under 49-year deal

29 June 2026 10:33

Kazakhstan's Parliament has approved an agreement with Kyrgyzstan on the mutual provision of buildings and land plots free of charge for the establishment of embassies and ambassadors' residences in Astana and Bishkek, the Senate's press service has stated.

The agreement, signed in Bishkek on Aug. 22, 2025, provides for the transfer of the properties for 49 years at no cost, with the option of an extension, Caliber.Az reports, citing Kazakh media.

Under the agreement, Kazakhstan will receive a 0.75-hectare land plot in Bishkek for its embassy, as well as an ambassador's residence consisting of a 531.66-square-meter cottage with an adjoining 0.17-hectare plot.

In return, Kyrgyzstan will be granted a 0.74-hectare site in Astana for its embassy, along with an ambassador's residence comprising a 1,267.8-square-meter cottage and an adjoining 0.125-hectare plot.

The properties will be exempt from all taxes and fees in both countries. Each side will independently cover the costs of construction, maintenance, repairs, and utility services in accordance with the host country's tariffs.

The Senate said ratification of the agreement would provide a solid legal framework for the long-term operation of the diplomatic missions and help strengthen bilateral cooperation.
