Kazakhstan ratifies European convention on mutual legal assistance in criminal cases

Kazakhstan’s parliament has ratified an agreement allowing the country to join the European Convention on Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters.

The convention provides for the exchange of evidence and legal assistance in criminal cases between participating countries, Caliber.Az reports, citing Kazakh media.

Deputy Prosecutor General Galymzhan Koigeldiyev said Kazakhstan had been working with the Foreign Ministry to join the convention since 2001. The country was invited to accede to it in June last year.

Ratification will also allow Kazakhstan to seek the return of assets illegally transferred abroad.
