Kazakhstan warns drone attacks threaten global trade routes

24 July 2026 18:02

Kazakhstan’s Foreign Minister Yerzhan Kosherbayev has warned that drone attacks on oil tankers chartered by the country are undermining the security of international trade routes, highlighting growing risks to global supply chains.

Speaking at a meeting of foreign ministers from the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan, Kosherbayev said escalating geopolitical tensions are increasingly spilling into the military domain, with direct consequences for trade stability.

“Geopolitical turbulence, shifting into the military sphere, is having a most serious impact on the stability of trade relations. Today, the issue of supply chain security is becoming increasingly relevant, including for Kazakhstan. A clear example of this is the attacks by unidentified unmanned systems on energy infrastructure and oil tankers chartered by Kazakhstan for transportation. Against this backdrop, joint efforts to ensure the security of trade routes are gaining particular importance,” he said.
