Kenya protests erupt over fuel price hikes, fatalities reported
Mass protests have continued across Kenya amid a nationwide consumer strike over petroleum products triggered by rising fuel prices, with government officials reporting at least four deaths and dozens of injuries.
The protests have been accompanied by unrest in several cities, including Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, and Ruiru, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
At the same time, associations of minibus taxi operators have launched a strike, effectively bringing public transport to a standstill in many regions.
Kenya’s Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen said four people were killed and around 30 others injured during the clashes. He also reported the arrest of approximately 350 protesters.
Authorities said some groups blocked roads and clashed with police. Nairobi officials stated that demonstrators obstructed traffic and were armed with stones.
In response to the crisis, the energy regulator announced a reduction in diesel prices, while petrol prices remained unchanged, and kerosene prices were increased.
Despite these measures, transport companies continue their strike. Residents in urban areas have been forced to walk or rely on a limited number of minibuses.
