Azerbaijan is hosting the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, drawing an array of high-profile global leaders, experts, and officials from key international organizations and institutions. This year’s summit, held in Baku, is expected to address critical issues surrounding climate change, global sustainability, and the role of international finance in tackling environmental challenges.

Ajay Banga, President of the World Bank Group, arrived in Azerbaijan on November 11 to contribute to the climate discussions at COP29. Banga was warmly welcomed at Heydar Aliyev International Airport by Elchin Mirzayev, Head of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs, along with other officials. The World Bank’s involvement in the conference underscores its ongoing commitment to financing climate change mitigation and adaptation projects worldwide.

Also arriving was Odile Renaud-Basso, President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). She was greeted by Ramin Rzayev, Head of the Department at Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The EBRD’s presence highlights the critical role of financial institutions in driving investment for sustainable development and green initiatives in emerging economies.

Murray Auchincloss, CEO of bp, arrived in Azerbaijan on the same day, marking the energy sector’s significant participation at the conference. Auchincloss was welcomed by Farid Gayibov, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Youth and Sports. As one of the world’s largest energy companies, bp’s involvement is key in shaping the global conversation on energy transition and climate action.

Alessandro Viviani, Associate Partner at The European House – Ambrosetti, also arrived in Baku to attend the summit, joined by Ramin Rzayev for the formal welcome. Viviani’s participation reflects the importance of private sector insights into climate finance and policy, particularly from Europe.

Amy Pope, Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), touched down in Azerbaijan on November 12 to participate in the climate talks. Pope was welcomed by Hasan Hasanli, Azerbaijan’s Deputy Minister of Science and Education, and her attendance emphasizes the intersection between migration and climate change, as well as the global need for inclusive and sustainable solutions.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), also arrived to discuss the public health impacts of climate change. He was greeted by Azerbaijani officials at the airport. The WHO’s focus at COP29 includes addressing how climate change exacerbates global health challenges and the need for health systems to adapt to the changing environment.

On November 11, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, arrived in Baku for his visit to COP29. Berset’s participation signals the Council of Europe’s ongoing efforts to promote environmental sustainability across the continent. His arrival was also marked by a reception at the airport by Azerbaijani officials.

Additionally, Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), arrived in Baku to contribute to discussions on global energy policies, climate action, and the role of international organizations in shaping energy transitions. Birol's arrival emphasizes the critical importance of global energy governance in the fight against climate change.
