Komala Party camp in Iraqi Kurdistan hit by suspected Iranian drone attack

21 May 2026 09:15

A camp belonging to the Kurdistan Komala Party of Iran near Sulaymaniyah in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region came under an Iranian drone attack on 20 May, according to party officials.

They said no injuries were identified, Caliber.Az reports, citing Kurdish media.

The incident comes days after four missiles reportedly struck another base linked to the same Kurdish opposition group southwest of Sulaymaniyah province on May 18, injuring at least two people.

The reported attack follows heightened regional tensions after the United States and Israel launched a large-scale aerial campaign against Iran in late February, targeting thousands of sites across the country during six weeks of hostilities.

Iran subsequently responded with extensive drone and missile strikes across the Middle East, targeting what it described as US-linked assets, particularly in Gulf Arab states, while also carrying out retaliatory attacks against Israel.

Iran-backed armed factions in Iraq, aligned with the so-called Axis of Resistance, also claimed responsibility for several attacks on alleged US targets in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region during the escalation.

Tehran has additionally intensified operations against Kurdish dissident groups based in northern Iraq, accusing them of posing security threats to Iran.
