Kremlin downplays impact of possible Putin–Trump talks
Dmitry Peskov, press secretary to the President of Russia, said a single phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump would not be enough to significantly improve the global situation or reverse ongoing negative trends.
According to TASS, Peskov made the remarks in response to suggestions that direct communication between the two leaders could have a stabilising effect on international affairs.
“I have not heard such opinions from experts. Of course, a single telephone conversation can hardly improve the situation in the world, because, unfortunately, the concentration of conflicts is so high and the consequences of a number of conflicts for the international situation and the international economy are so serious that, of course, it is very difficult to stop these trends at once,” Peskov said.
He added that “telephone conversations between the two presidents can be agreed upon quite quickly.”
