Lebanese PM supports US ceasefire proposal, stresses Israeli withdrawal from south of Litani
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati has expressed a generally positive response to the American proposal for a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict, while stressing the need for Israeli forces to completely withdraw from Lebanese territory.
Speaking to reporters, Mikati clarified that contrary to some media reports, the proposal presented by the United States does not grant Israel unrestricted freedom of action within Lebanon, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
He emphasized that the initiative is aligned with UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which brought an end to the Second Lebanon War in 2006.
Mikati further highlighted the importance of reinforcing the Lebanese military's presence south of the Litani River, stating, “Only the legitimate representatives of the state will have the right to bear arms in this area.”
The Lebanese Prime Minister also noted that Amos Hochstein, the US Special Presidential Coordinator for Global Infrastructure and Energy Security, will soon visit Beirut to discuss the remaining points of contention. Mikati expressed hope that the ongoing dialogue will lead to a comprehensive agreement in the near future.
