Agreement on security guarantees "ready" to be signed—Zelenskyy
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has provided an update on ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the conflict with Russia, revealing that an agreement on security guarantees for Ukraine was “ready to be signed.”
Speaking to journalists on January 23, the Ukrainian leader elaborated on his talks with the US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Caliber.Az reports, citing Ukrainian media.
He stated that he raised the issues of air defence and long-term security guarantees for Ukraine.
“The agreement on security guarantees is ready to be signed. I am waiting for Trump to set a date and place,” Zelenskyy announced.
He also commented on discussions surrounding Ukraine’s economic recovery, which were held both during an extraordinary EU leaders’ summit the previous day and at his bilateral meeting with Trump in Switzerland.
Zelenskyy said the so-called prosperity package for Ukraine comprises several documents that have yet to be finalized, but expressed confidence in a favourable outcome. He described the outlook for the initiative as having “positive outcomes.”
Addressing the situation in eastern Ukraine, Zelenskyy stressed that the status of the Donbas region remains a central issue in the negotiations. He told reporters that it would be discussed during the meeting in the United Arab Emirates, scheduled to take place “today and tomorrow,” as he travelled from Davos to Abu Dhabi for talks involving representatives from Ukraine, the United States, and Russia.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed the progress on a prosperity plan for Ukraine, with the European Union and the United States nearing an agreement. Speaking following the EU summit on January 22, she noted that the initiative is built around five pillars: productivity, Ukraine’s integration into the EU market, investment, donors, and reforms.
