FM: Europe must discuss security architecture with Russia after Ukraine war
European countries will have to discuss the regional security architecture with Russia after the conflict in Ukraine ends, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot told BFMTV.
"In any case, once the chapter of the war in Ukraine is closed, and once Russia has defined new guidelines for itself... when the time comes, we will of course need to start discussions with Russia on the issue of European security architecture," he said, Caliber.Az reports.
Russia’s full‑scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 has dramatically disrupted the post‑Cold War European security order, weakening established mechanisms and prompting EU states to rethink how to guarantee peace and defence on the continent.
European governments and experts argue that existing security structures, shaped by NATO, OSCE and EU policies, must be adapted because the war exposed gaps in deterrence and collective defence against Russian aggression.
Some proposals for a future security architecture consider enhanced EU strategic autonomy and cooperation across NATO and EU institutions, but differences remain over whether, how and under what conditions Russia could be included in such a system.
