Lockheed Martin tests enhanced PrSM capable of tracking moving targets
Lockheed Martin has successfully conducted the first flight test of the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) Increment 2, marking a significant milestone in the United States Army’s long-range fires modernization program.
According to the company, the test demonstrated the missile’s new multi-mode seeker and its capability to engage moving maritime targets. The missile completed a 350-kilometre flight after being launched from a M142 HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System), during which it deployed protective covers and collected a wide range of performance data intended to validate the system.
The upgraded missile incorporates a new guidance system featuring a multi-mode seeker capable of providing targeting guidance and locking onto moving, time-sensitive threats.
PrSM Increment 2 also introduces a maritime-strike capability to the baseline missile’s land-attack mission, expanding its operational role in joint and multi-domain operations.
With the enhanced system, the Army will be able to target relocating or fleeting threats across both land and maritime environments, strengthening its sea-denial capabilities.
The missile remains compatible with existing launch platforms, including the M142 HIMARS and the M270A2 Multiple Launch Rocket System, allowing the service to preserve its current launcher footprint while simplifying logistics and accelerating deployment.
“With Increment 2, PrSM delivers the long-range capability the Army asked for to defeat moving land and maritime threats,” said Carolyn Orzechowski, vice president of Precision Fires Launchers and Missiles at Lockheed Martin. “Our focused investment and accelerated delivery demonstrate our unwavering commitment to the Army customer.”
“Lockheed Martin is investing in advanced development and digital engineering to accelerate the fielding of PrSM Increment 2,” said Gaylia Campbell, vice president and general manager of Tactical Missiles at the company. “By leveraging modular design, agile processes and close collaboration with the Army and our supplier network, we’re moving quickly to deliver this enhanced capability to the warfighter faster without compromising performance or reliability.”
The company said its accelerated development strategy—supported by significant internal investment—is helping move the system from flight testing toward operational capability at an unprecedented pace.
The program is currently in the technology-maturation phase, with its Preliminary Design Review underway. Additional flight tests of PrSM Increment 2 are scheduled later this year.
