Macron to break silence as National Assembly prepares impeachment vote
French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to make a statement on the evening of October 8, according to Le Figaro.
The newspaper reports that Macron will speak after the expiration of the deadline he set for former Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu to hold talks “with the political forces.”
On October 7, Mathilde Panot, leader of the France Unbowed (La France Insoumise) party, announced that the Bureau of the National Assembly — the lower house of parliament — would review a motion to remove President Macron from office. The motion, already signed by 104 parliamentarians, is scheduled for a vote on October 8.
Lecornu resigned on October 6 after serving just 27 days as prime minister, only hours after unveiling his new cabinet lineup. The composition of the government was sharply criticised by both Macron’s allies and the opposition. Following the resignation, Macron granted Lecornu 48 hours to hold “final discussions with the political forces".
Panot reiterated on October 7 that the impeachment proposal would be brought before the National Assembly Bureau, stressing that support for the initiative had already reached 104 signatures, with the vote set for October 8.
