Magnitude 4.9 earthquake strikes near Russia’s Kuril Islands

A magnitude 4.9 earthquake was recorded 124 kilometres northwest of Matua Island in Russia’s Kuril Islands.

Elena Semenova, head of the Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk seismic station, said the earthquake’s epicentre was located at a depth of 318 kilometres, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

The seismic event was recorded at 3:42 p.m. Sakhalin time.

No reports have been received that the earthquake was felt in populated areas, according to the available information.
