Magnitude 5.4 earthquake strikes southeastern Türkiye

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck the Karaköprü district of Şanlıurfa province in southeastern Türkiye on Thursday, September 24, according to the country’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

The earthquake occurred at 10:40 a.m. local time at a depth of 7.39 kilometres, AFAD was quoted as saying by local media. The tremor was felt in several surrounding provinces, including Adıyaman, Malatya, Gaziantep and Diyarbakır.

Local authorities and emergency services were assessing the situation, including any possible damage to infrastructure and reports of casualties.

There was an early discrepancy in magnitude estimates: Türkiye’s Kandilli Observatory reported the earthquake at magnitude 5.8, while AFAD recorded it as magnitude 5.4.
