Media: 1952 royal decree keeps lethal force rule for Greenland invasion
A 1952 royal decree allowing troops to use lethal force in the event of an invasion of Greenland remains in effect.
The Danish Ministry of Defence confirms that the directive on Greenland’s defence remains in effect, according to Berlingske newspaper.
Under the decree, military personnel defending the island may open fire immediately, without awaiting orders from senior leadership.
Developments emerge amid US President Donald Trump’s intentions to “acquire” Greenland, whose foreign policy and defence are under Denmark’s control.
Previously, POLITICO, citing NATO sources and European diplomats, reported that the European Union has plans to deploy forces to Greenland amid concerns that the US could threaten the Danish territory.
Berlingske also noted that EU officials have called for preparations for a potential direct confrontation with former US President Donald Trump, in light of his claims over Greenland.
