Media: Armenian PM plans to appoint chief advisor as next parliamentary speaker
21 January 2026 10:39
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan reportedly wants his chief advisor, Lilit Makunts, to become the speaker of parliament following the June elections.
According to Yerevan newspaper Hraparak, Pashinyan plans to organise an internal party vote to ensure that the former ambassador to the US secures the most votes when pre-election lists are approved, Caliber.Az reports.
The newspaper noted that Pashinyan intends a two-stage election to demonstrate the process’s democratic nature.
In the first stage, delegates will select 50 candidates without assigning list positions, with rankings revealed in the second stage, during which the prime minister aims to secure a top spot for Makunts.
