Media: EU set to open €60 billion Ukraine arms fund to British weapons
The European Union is preparing to allow Ukraine to purchase weapons from the United Kingdom under a €60 billion military financing program allocated to Kyiv for 2026–2027, Bloomberg reports.
The move would enable British defence companies to participate in the EU-backed initiative, with Brussels reportedly close to reaching an agreement with the UK government on the terms of their involvement.
The EU intends to allow Ukraine to buy British weapons under the €60 billion program it is providing to this country for military needs. The European Union is close to reaching an agreement with the UK government so that British companies can benefit from this program.
According to the agency, the European Commission is seeking assurances that the UK government will help finance Ukrainian arms purchases whenever Kyiv requests permission to use EU funds to acquire British-made weapons.
Earlier, European Commission spokesperson Thomas Renier said that Brussels' military support mechanism for Ukraine includes a "buy European" requirement. Under the provision, Kyiv must submit all contracts for weapons purchases financed through the program to the European Commission for approval.
The Commission may authorize procurement from suppliers outside Europe only if the required weapons systems, or suitable alternatives, are unavailable from European manufacturers, Renier said.
