Media: Europe may face aviation fuel shortage by summer
The European aviation sector could face disruption due to a potential shortage of aviation fuel in the coming months, according to a report by Corriere della Sera, citing European sources and confidential data.
The report says that in several European countries strategic kerosene reserves may last only 8–10 days, while just two EU member states reportedly maintain reserves sufficient for around 90 days.
Europe currently imports around 43% of its aviation fuel from the Persian Gulf region, making supply chains vulnerable to instability in the wider Middle East, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the analysis, there is an expectation in Brussels that the ceasefire between the United States, Israel and Iran will hold, helping to ensure stable maritime traffic through the key shipping route. However, even under normal conditions, fuel delivery and unloading processes could take up to two months.
Italy is estimated to have aviation fuel reserves covering 30–60 days, although only part of these stocks are directly usable for aviation purposes.
The United States is being considered as a potential alternative supplier, but both pricing and delivery conditions remain uncertain.
