Media: French leader orders in-depth review of seizing Russia's frozen assets
Spokesperson for the French government Sophie Primas has said that French President Emmanuel Macron has instructed the Ministry of Finance to conduct a thorough analysis of the potential consequences of seizing Russia’s frozen assets.
Primas confirmed that the issue of confiscating Russia's blocked assets is not currently under consideration. For the time being, this is the French government’s position, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
"However, the president and prime minister have asked Finance Minister Eric Lombard to carry out a deeper study of the possible ramifications of such a decision. Clearly, this is a very tempting option, as we are talking about 230 billion euros," Primas added.
Earlier, French Armed Forces Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced that the French authorities would provide Ukraine with a new military aid package worth 195 million euros. The funding for this package will come from the interest earned on Russia's frozen assets. France has also proposed the confiscation of frozen Russian state assets in the EU if Russia violates any future ceasefire agreements in Ukraine. Paris views this measure as a way to guarantee Ukraine's security. While the proposal has received a positive response from France's European partners, final approval has not been reached yet.
