Media: Iran expected to name IPIS official as new envoy to Armenia

Following the conclusion of Mehdi Sobhani’s tenure as Iran’s ambassador to Armenia, media reports suggest that Khalil Shirgholami is expected to be appointed as his successor. 

Shirgholami currently serves as Vice President for Research at the Institute for Political and International Studies (IPIS), the research arm of Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. If confirmed, this would mark his first ambassadorial assignment, Caliber.Az reports via Tasnim news agency.

The transition comes after a farewell meeting between Sobhani and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, which took place in Yerevan and was announced by the Armenian Prime Minister’s Office on September 17.
