Media: Iran rejects export of enriched uranium
Iran has ruled out exporting its enriched uranium abroad while signalling a willingness to lower enrichment levels domestically under international monitoring, according to a report by Al Jazeera citing a source within Iranian government structures.
The source said Tehran “refused to transfer uranium outside Iran and expressed readiness to reduce the level of enrichment on its own territory under IAEA supervision,” indicating a preference for maintaining control over its nuclear materials while still engaging with oversight mechanisms of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
The same source stated that the United States had pushed for a stricter condition, demanding “a 20-year period of cessation of uranium enrichment,” a proposal that Iran rejected. In response, Tehran reiterated that it could manage the process internally, emphasising its readiness for “independently reducing the level of uranium enrichment.”
The report also said that Washington has adjusted its position regarding the handling of Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium. According to the source, “Washington refused [the idea of] transferring Iranian highly enriched uranium to Russia and proposed a third country as a possible recipient of it (the uranium - ed.).”
