Media: Israel seeks US backing for expanded Beirut strikes

01 June 2026 09:55

Senior Israeli officials have appealed to senior U.S. officials for approval to expand military strikes in Beirut, according to two sources cited by The Jerusalem Post on May 31.

The sources said Israeli officials believe Washington may respond favoruably amid stalled negotiations between the United States and Iran, as well as a lack of progress in talks between Israel and Lebanon.

The diplomatic push comes as international concern mounts over the escalating conflict in Lebanon.

Early on June 1, UK Foreign Minister Yvette Cooper called on Israel to halt its military operations in Lebanon, saying, "It must end."

"Israel's military escalation in Lebanon has killed and displaced civilians, destroyed infrastructure, and eroded space for diplomacy," said Cooper.

On May 31, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul urged all parties to cease hostilities, describing Israel's advance into southern Lebanon as "cause for serious concern."

"Any further escalation will exacerbate the already tense situation and trigger new waves of displacement within Lebanon," Wadephul added.

Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on May 31 that it had taken control of the Beaufort Ridge outpost and the Wadi al-Saluki area north of the Litani River in southern Lebanon. The military said the Israeli Air Force, artillery units and tanks carried out extensive strikes against Hezbollah infrastructure to support the advance.

The IDF added that it was operating near the Hezbollah stronghold of Nabatiya and was prepared to expand its operations.

Israel said on May 26 that it would move beyond the ceasefire's Yellow Line and the Litani River in response to continued Hezbollah drone attacks that have killed and wounded Israeli soldiers.

In an effort to prevent further escalation, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has held talks over the past 48 hours with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to advance a new ceasefire initiative.

According to the proposal, the United States has suggested that Hezbollah halt all attacks against Israel as an initial step. In return, Israel would refrain from escalating military operations in Beirut.
