Media: Kazakhstan sets sights on future with new nuclear energy agency

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has confirmed the establishment of a Nuclear Energy Agency, a significant step aimed at bolstering the country’s energy sector.

President Tokayev underscored the importance of this move, stating that the agency will be formed under the direct supervision of the president to ensure its effective management and strategic development, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.

In his announcement, President Tokayev highlighted the long-term vision behind this decision: “It is strategically important for us to establish a new energy sector that will lay a strong foundation for dynamic economic development for decades to come.”

President Tokayev noted that Kazakhstan will build three nuclear power plants as part of its strategy to address growing energy deficits. 

He stressed the urgency of accelerating the construction of the country’s first nuclear power plant and beginning the creation of a "nuclear cluster" in Kazakhstan.

Previously, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that Russia had submitted its proposals regarding the construction of nuclear power plants in Kazakhstan. 

"Russia is not just ready to help; Russia has already submitted its proposals. We closely followed the referendum that President Tokayev held in Kazakhstan and observed the support he received for his plans to develop nuclear energy," Lavrov stated.

The diplomat also mentioned that the Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom is prepared to assist Kazakhstan within the bilateral cooperation. In addition, Russia is open to collaborating with agencies and organisations from other countries.
