Media: Trump explores deployment of private military contractors to Ukraine

30 August 2025 16:47

Donald Trump is reportedly discussing a long-term peace plan for Ukraine that could involve deploying American private military contractors, according to the latest revelation by The Telegraph.

The plan, in coordination with European allies, aims to fortify Ukraine’s front lines, build bases, protect US interests, and deter Russia from violating a potential ceasefire—all without stationing US troops directly in the country.

The proposal forms part of broader “security guarantees” crafted by a coalition led by the UK and France, alongside air policing, training, and Black Sea naval missions. Trump’s recent talks with Vladimir Putin in Alaska reportedly accelerated European military planning.

Under the plan, Ukrainian forces would defend a reinforced border, while European allies would provide training and armaments, including US-supplied systems like Patriot missiles and Himars rocket launchers. American contractors would construct front-line fortifications and bases, increasing the deterrent effect against Russian aggression.

The plan also contemplates a demilitarised buffer zone between Ukrainian and Russian forces, potentially patrolled by European troops or observers, with Ukraine likely demanding a European presence and Russia suggesting China as a security guarantor. The US would offer logistical, intelligence, and surveillance support to European forces.

Additionally, air policing is proposed to gradually reopen Ukrainian commercial airspace, initially in the West, while Türkiye is expected to lead a Black Sea naval mission to secure shipping routes. European training missions, including France’s and Britain’s Operation Interflex, may be relocated to Western Ukraine, with US heavy-lift aircraft assisting equipment and troop transport.

Financial support is part of the plan: European allies have pledged at least $10 billion in American-made military hardware to Ukraine, with Kyiv proposing an additional $90 billion post-conflict. The US has also approved the potential sale of air-launched cruise missiles and related support equipment worth $825 million.

A US military commander, possibly NATO’s Alexus Grynkewich, could oversee operations to address Europe’s limited experience in coordinating large-scale missions. Russia has criticised the proposals as “one-sided” and aimed at containing Moscow, heightening European scepticism.

Trump’s peace plan discussions also included economic incentives for Russia, such as access to rare earth minerals in Ukrainian-occupied territories, lifting some aviation sanctions, and opening Alaskan resources. Ukraine’s officials insist no US pressure has been applied regarding territorial concessions.
