Media: Trump leaves Spain trade row, Iran ceasefire off NATO agenda
U.S. President Donald Trump avoided several contentious issues during a meeting with NATO allies, declining to repeat his criticism of Spain, revisit Iran or raise the issue of Greenland, a source familiar with the discussions said.
According to Reuters, the source said Trump made no reference to Spain, despite previously criticising the NATO ally over defence spending.
He also did not revisit his earlier announcement ending the temporary ceasefire agreement with Iran, nor did he mention Greenland, an issue that has previously caused friction within the alliance.
Earlier, Trump had ordered a halt to trade with Spain, linking the move to disagreements over Madrid's defence spending commitments and the conflict involving Iran.
Earlier, Trump said Washington bears an unfair share of the alliance's security costs while allies contribute too little in return.
Speaking on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, Trump also said he had instructed Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to sever trade ties with Spain, branding Madrid a "terrible partner" within the alliance, Reuters reports.
