Media: UK advises Ukraine on peace talks as Russia intensifies attacks
Britain is offering guidance to Ukraine as President Zelenskyy prepares for crucial peace talks with the United States while facing intensified Russian attacks.
Jonathan Powell, national security adviser to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, visited Ukraine to brief Zelenskyy before the upcoming talks, aimed at avoiding a repeat of the controversial Oval Office encounter with Donald Trump, Caliber.Az reports, citing The Times.
Meanwhile, the UK is lobbying Trump to resume intelligence sharing with Ukraine following its abrupt suspension last week, which could impact Ukraine’s ability to defend against Russian strikes.
In a post on X on March 9, Zelenskyy said: "Throughout this week, Russia has carried out hundreds of attacks against our people using various types of weapons," specifying "1,200 guided aerial bombs, nearly 870 attack drones, and over 80 missiles of different types."
Zelenskyy added: “Every day, we work with our partners to ensure that decisions are made to provide life-saving support: air defence systems, investments in our defence production, and the strengthening of sanctions against Russia.”
In a related development, Zelenskyy is en route to Saudi Arabia for a meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ahead of talks between Ukrainian and American officials. Zelenskyy’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, will attend the discussions in his place.
The negotiations follow remarks from Trump suggesting Ukraine may lose the war, even with continued US support. “Well, it may not survive anyway,” Trump said, acknowledging Russia's growing influence in the conflict.
As part of ongoing efforts, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin will meet military leaders from Starmer's "coalition of the willing" in Paris on March 11, as more nations, including Australia, Canada, and Turkey, express willingness to contribute to peacekeeping efforts.
