Media: US warship joins missile interceptions off Israeli coast For first time
For the first time ever, a US Navy warship equipped with the advanced Aegis missile defence system took part in intercepting a missile barrage launched from Iran.
The ship is currently anchored off the coast of Israel and works alongside American THAAD batteries and Israel’s own Arrow system to successfully neutralise incoming threats, Caliber.Az reports per N12.
During the latest salvo, eight ballistic missiles were fired towards the region. All were either intercepted or fell in open areas, resulting in no damage or casualties.
The Aegis system, developed by Lockheed Martin, is among the most sophisticated naval defence technologies in the world.
It is designed to protect against air and sea threats and forms a vital part of the US and allied strategic defence networks. Its name is inspired by the shield of Zeus from Greek mythology.
On June 17, the Israeli military presented a comprehensive plan to the political leadership, detailing broad strategic objectives across Iran.
A senior Israeli official said on June 17, “If the US joins the campaign and supports Israel, it will be possible to achieve the operation's objectives and bring the fighting to an end by the end of this week.”
Originally planned to last up to three weeks, the operation targets key Iranian nuclear sites, military infrastructure, and command centres deep within Iranian territory.
