Medvedev: No negotiations with Kyiv until complete defeat

21 August 2024 13:29

In response to Kyiv’s attack on Russia’s Kursk region, Russia has declared it will not engage in negotiations with Ukraine until it is completely defeated.

Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, conveyed this stance through his Telegram channel, as per Caliber.Az.

Medvedev stated, "Following the neo-Nazis' terrorist act in Kursk, the situation has become clear. The empty talk of unauthorized mediators about a peaceful resolution has ceased. It is now understood, even if not explicitly stated, that there will be no negotiations until the complete defeat of the enemy."

On August 6, 2024, Ukraine launched a surprise incursion into the Russian Kursk region, marking the largest offensive by a foreign army on Russian soil since World War II. This bold move saw Ukrainian forces capture more than 1,250 square kilometres and 92 settlements within the region. The offensive has been met with strong condemnation from Moscow, which views it as a significant escalation of the conflict.

President Volodymyr Zelensky defended the incursion, stating that its primary objective was to establish a “buffer zone” within Russian territory.

The situation has intensified geopolitical tensions, with international reactions focusing on the implications of this unprecedented military action and its potential to reshape the dynamics of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
