Meloni rules out Italian participation in war against Iran
Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister of Italy, said her government will not take part in the ongoing US-Israeli military operations against Iran and is instead focusing on efforts to promote a diplomatic solution.
Addressing lawmakers on Wednesday, March 11, Meloni stated that Italy “isn’t taking part and won’t take part” in the war in Iran. She described the widening conflict as part of a broader “crisis of international law.”
The Italian prime minister characterised the situation surrounding Iran as one of the most complex moments in recent history and urged opposition parties to unite with the government in defending Italy’s national interests.
Meloni also noted that before the outbreak of hostilities, Italy worked alongside Qatar and Oman in efforts aimed at preventing military intervention.
She added that Italy has maintained communication channels with Tehran and hosted two rounds of nuclear talks last year.
In addition, Meloni said the government could take measures against companies accused of speculating as energy prices surge due to the conflict. She reiterated that the government is prepared to impose additional taxes on such firms, although she did not provide further details.
