Merz calls Türkiye key strategic ally for Germany
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has described Türkiye as a key strategic ally, underscoring Ankara’s importance in foreign and defence policy following talks with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Speaking at a press conference after the NATO summit in Ankara, Merz said that “Türkiye is an important strategic ally for Germany,” highlighting the significance of close cooperation within the alliance, particularly given Türkiye’s geostrategic position.
Merz said he reaffirmed this position during his meeting with Erdoğan, emphasising the need for continued coordination between the two NATO partners.
The chancellor also pointed to developments in Syria, noting Germany’s recognition of Türkiye’s role in the region. “Without the contribution of the President of Türkiye, this would probably not have been possible. In this respect, Türkiye makes a huge contribution to the stability of the region,” he said.
Merz added that he had urged Erdoğan to use his influence, in coordination with Berlin, to encourage Russian President Vladimir Putin to bring the war in Ukraine to an end.
He also confirmed plans for the next round of German-Turkish intergovernmental consultations on strategic cooperation, which are set to be hosted by Germany.
