Merz: Germany returns to negotiating table with Iran
Germany has resumed talks with Iran, Chancellor Friedrich Merz said, marking a renewed diplomatic push coordinated with Washington and European partners.
Speaking in a statement on the situation in the Middle East, Merz said the federal government was re-engaging with Tehran after a prolonged period of silence, which he attributed to “serious reasons” on Germany’s part, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
“After a prolonged period of silence, for which there were serious reasons on our side, we as the German government are resuming talks with Tehran,” he said.
“We are doing so in coordination with the United States and our European partners. Our aim is thereby to contribute to the success of the forthcoming negotiations.”
Merz added that the effort formed part of broader diplomatic outreach, including a recent telephone call with Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.
“We are following the situation across the entire region with great concern,” the German chancellor said.
