Middle East escalation reroutes Armenia trade flows via Georgia

04 May 2026 16:09

Rising tensions in the Middle East have disrupted traditional transit routes to Armenia, pushing a growing share of cargo through Georgian ports, according to the Centre for Transport Corridor Studies.

The organisation said transit via Iran into Armenia has “practically stopped”, while delivery times for goods from China have increased from 45–60 days to around three months, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.

The disruption has made Georgia a more competitive alternative for regional logistics flows.

As a result, a significant portion of freight is now being rerouted through Georgian maritime gateways before continuing overland to Armenia. Despite the shift in routing, overall logistics costs have remained broadly stable.

The report noted that the overland distance from the Georgian port of Poti to Yerevan is approximately 700 kilometres, compared with nearly 2,000 kilometres from Iran’s Bandar Abbas port
