Migrant boat capsizes south of Crete, five dead
Five migrants drowned on the early morning of February 21, in waters south of Crete, while at least 20 others remain missing. The tragedy occurred about 27 kilometres south of Kala Limenes, on the island’s southern coast.
According to Greek media, citing coast guard data, the incident happened when one of two commercial vessels approached a wooden boat carrying migrants.
As passengers attempted to climb aboard the ship using a ladder, many moved to one side at the same time, causing the boat to capsize.
A Panama-flagged cargo ship rescued 20 people, while vessels from the Greek coast guard and the border agency Frontex recovered three bodies. Two more bodies were later found at sea.
Search and rescue operations are continuing. Survivors said there were around 50 people on board, raising fears that the death toll could rise. Coast guard ships, a helicopter and a military aircraft are taking part in the operation.
Greece remains a key route for migrants trying to reach the European Union via the Mediterranean Sea.
