Military expert Nersisyan: Russian air defence in Armenia does not work

Military expert Leonid Nersisyan said the Russian air defence system in Armenia does not work.

"Armenia has had that Russian air defence system for a long time, so there is no question of signing or not signing any document now. The other problem is that these systems have never really worked," Nersisyan said in an interview with Armenian media, commenting on Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu's statements on the readiness of the parties to document the existence of a unified air defence system, Caliber.Az reports.

"And already in September 2022, there were situations when they should have worked. Although they showed some form of reaction, but it did not show anything. I'm not talking about 2020 yet.

Frankly speaking, the CSTO [Collective Security Treaty Organization] air defence system that we are talking about is the de facto air defence systems of the 102nd military base, which are very limited and quite old in Armenia. This is not some secret information, and anyone who wishes can find it about it. I'm not saying that it doesn't exist, but I can't say that the systems that are there can be fundamentally different from Armenia's air defence system, say, in 2020. Therefore, it seems to me that it is important for Armenia to develop the Armenian air defence system as intensively as possible," the expert said.
