Georgia’s top lawmaker accuses West of undermining national sovereignty
Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili has levelled serious allegations against the administration of former US President Joe Biden, asserting that it engaged in subversive activities intended to destabilize the Georgian government and orchestrate a change of power in the South Caucasus region.
Speaking to reporters, Papuashvili stated that bilateral relations between Georgia and the United States had suffered under the Biden administration, which, according to him, was directly involved in destabilizing efforts, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
“US-Georgian relations were damaged by the Biden administration. It tried to change power here and participated in subversive activities against the Georgian authorities,” Papuashvili said.
The parliamentary chairman further alleged that US funding channeled through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) had supported disinformation campaigns and violent groups within Georgia. However, he noted that this dynamic shifted in early 2025 after current US President Donald Trump terminated USAID’s funding.
“After the United States stopped harmful funding of disinformation, violent groups or propaganda in other countries, which took place through USAID or other channels, the EU budget began to encourage propaganda, hate speech and violence,” Papuashvili said, claiming that European financial support to Georgian non-governmental organisations (NGOs) has since taken up where Washington left off.
Papuashvili’s remarks come as the Georgian government faces mounting international criticism over a proposed "foreign agents" law widely seen as targeting NGOs and media outlets with Western funding.
