Minister: Kyrgyzstan cannot suspend trade with Russia
Kyrgyzstan has criticised Western sanctions targeting domestic companies with links to Russia, saying they are “unjustified” and unsupported by evidence.
Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubaev said that Western authorities have not provided proof that Kyrgyz companies are violating sanctions, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
“We have held a series of consultations with the United States and the European Union, explained our position, and even proposed an independent audit. So far, they have deemed this unnecessary and are imposing sanctions unilaterally. We consider this wrong,” Kulubaev said.
The minister emphasised that Kyrgyzstan cannot suspend trade with its traditional partners. “During conflicts and crises, our economy is already limited. We must continue to work, trade, and ensure the security and welfare of our people,” he added.
Kulubaev has provided an update on Kyrgyz nationals residing in the United States, estimated at around 40,000, including students and labour migrants.
Kulubaev warned that citizens staying in the US without a valid visa or violating immigration rules risk deportation. To date, about 20 deportations have been recorded, with a similar number expected. However, those with correct documentation face no issues.
He also addressed the issue of entry bonds, noting that the $15,000 requirement is significant for Kyrgyz citizens but forms part of US immigration policy. The minister emphasised that Kyrgyz authorities are in dialogue with the US to streamline the visa process while respecting American regulations.
Kulubaev stressed that timely document processing and adherence to visa terms are crucial. Similar rules apply in other countries, including Russia, and Kyrgyzstan continues efforts to protect its citizens abroad while improving consular services.
