Minister: Türkiye aims for zero emissions economy by 2053

28 November 2024 16:58

Türkiye aims to establish a zero-emissions economy within the next three decades, as outlined by the country's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar

During the 6th Turkish-German Energy Forum in Berlin, attended by Germany's Minister for Economic Affairs Robert Habeck, Bayraktar acknowledged that the goal was more challenging than others due to its significant impact on the entire economy, Caliber.Az reports per Turkish media.

He explained that Türkiye’s “carbon goal” would fundamentally transform the energy sector from the ground up.

The minister revealed that Türkiye intends to invest $100 billion in renewable energy sources by 2035. He also called on German investors to partner with Türkiye in its “energy transition” process. According to Bayraktar, Türkiye has developed a roadmap to expand its wind and solar energy capacities from the current 31,000 megawatts to 120,000 megawatts by 2035.

Bayraktar highlighted the role of nuclear energy in the country’s decarbonization efforts, noting that Türkiye plans to increase its nuclear energy capacity by 2050. The Minister pointed out that the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant, once operational, will meet 10% of Türkiye's electricity demand.

Robert Habeck praised Türkiye's role as a key partner in trade and energy. He emphasized the country’s strategic geographical location and significant energy potential.

"Türkiye is one of the key countries with which we aim to expand our trade and energy partnership," he stated.

As part of the forum, a number of agreements were signed, including partnerships for the installation of wind turbines and joint research initiatives.
