Montenegro, Spain, Uzbekistan reaffirm support for peace between Baku-Yerevan

09 August 2025 17:22

In a breakthrough agreement, Armenia and Azerbaijan have signed a joint declaration for peace in Washington on August 8. The accord has garnered widespread international praise, with Montenegro, Spain, and Uzbekistan among the first countries to welcome the development as a crucial step toward ending decades of conflict.

Montenegrin Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Filip Ivanović took to social media platform X to hail the deal, calling it “a vital contribution to ensuring peace, as well as lasting regional stability and prosperity.”

Congratulating the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the United States, Ivanović highlighted the significance of this moment for the entire region.

Spain’s Foreign Ministry echoed this sentiment, describing the agreement as a “decisive step towards definitive peace and the complete normalization of relations” between the two neighbours.

In an official statement, Spain expressed hope that the treaty would open a “new stage of cooperation, mutual understanding, and development” to benefit both nations and the broader South Caucasus. The ministry also reiterated Spain’s ongoing commitment to peace and stability in this strategically important area.

Uzbekistan, sharing historical and economic ties with the region, issued a statement emphasising the “significant progress” achieved in the peace talks. The Uzbek Foreign Ministry credited the success to the “firm political will and determination” of the Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders, along with the “active peacekeeping actions” of the US President.

Uzbekistan expressed confidence that this agreement will lay the groundwork for ambitious transport and infrastructure projects, fostering regional connectivity and prosperity for all peoples across the vast South Caucasus.
