Moscow says Russia plans to open general consulate in Armenia

19 July 2024 10:51

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has said that Russia is determined to launch the work of the Russian Consulate General in Armenia's Syunik region (Zangezur) as soon as possible.

She made the remarks during a briefing, the recording of which is available on YouTube, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

The diplomat highlighted the progress made through the joint efforts of Moscow and Yerevan.

"We have made significant progress in this direction thanks to the collaborative efforts of both parties," Zakharova said.

The establishment of the Consulate General is expected to enhance diplomatic and economic ties between Russia and Armenia, particularly in the strategically important Syunik region. Zakharova emphasized the importance of Armenia's cooperation in this initiative, stating, "We expect Armenia to take further steps, including taking into account the principle of parity and reciprocity adopted in diplomatic practice."

The announcement underscores Russia's commitment to expanding its diplomatic presence and fostering closer relations with Armenia, reflecting a broader strategy of regional engagement.
