Moscow welcomes joint statement by Baku, Yerevan on peace treaty

08 December 2023 14:18

The Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said that Moscow welcomed the joint statement by the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration and the Armenian Prime Minister's Office confirming the mutual intention to normalise relations and conclude a peace treaty between the two countries.

"We welcome the agreement between Baku and Yerevan on the release of Armenian and Azerbaijani servicemen. This contributes to the mutual strengthening of trust and opens up new opportunities in advancing the Armenia-Azerbaijan normalisation process in line with the comprehensive trilateral agreements of the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia in 2020-2022," Zakharova noted, Caliber.Az reports.

The spokeswoman stressed that the Russian side is ready to continue to provide all possible assistance in unblocking transport communications, delimitation of the border, conclusion of a peace treaty and contacts through civil society.

Earlier, Baku and Yerevan issued a joint statement of the Administration of the President of Azerbaijan and the office of Prime Minister of Armenia, which said that Baku would release 32 Armenian soldiers, and Yerevan - two Azerbaijani soldiers. According to the statement, Yerevan and Baku will continue negotiations on the implementation of additional confidence-building measures in the near future and call on the international community to support their efforts that will contribute to building mutual trust between two countries and will positively impact the entire South Caucasus region.
