MP detained in Kyrgyzstan on suspicion of high treason
Opposition member of the Kyrgyz parliament Adakhan Madumarov was arrested on suspicion of high treason.
“The Investigative Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic is investigating a criminal case on the fact of treason by high-ranking officials. On September 2, 2023, the former secretary of the Security Council of Kyrgyzstan [Madumarov Adakhan Kimsanbayevich] was detained as part of a criminal case,” the press service of the Kyrgyz Ministry of Internal Affairs said, Gazeta.Ru reports.
They noted that the suspect will be kept in a pre-trial detention centre, at the moment the investigation is ongoing. No other comments are given.
In June, the country's parliament, after a request from the Prosecutor General's Office, agreed to bring Madumarov to criminal liability, the text says.
Adakhan Madumarov is a deputy of four convocations, a candidate for the presidency of Kyrgyzstan in the elections of 2011 and 2017, and the leader of the opposition United Kyrgyzstan party. From October 2008 to October 2009, he served as head of the Security Council of Kyrgyzstan.
