NATO, UK, Russia, Germany ready to assist Türkiye in earthquake recovery
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has said that the Alliance’s member states are mobilising aid for Türkiye in the wake of the earthquake hitting Kahramanmaras city.
“Full solidarity with our Ally Türkiye in the aftermath of this terrible earthquake. I am in touch with President Erdogan and Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, and NATO Allies are mobilizing support now,” Caliber.Az quotes Stoltenberg as saying on February 6.
Meanwhile, UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly also announced his country’s readiness to assist Türkiye in coping with the earthquake consequences.
“Tragic loss of life in the Türkiye and Syria earthquake. Our condolences go to the families of those who died and our thoughts are with the survivors. The UK stands ready to provide assistance,” Cleverly tweeted.
At the same time, Kommersant reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin sent telegrams to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, expressing Moscow’s readiness to help Türkiye and Syria overcome the disaster’s consequences.
The Russian Emergencies Ministry was said to prepare two IL-76s (strategic aircraft) with rescuers to be sent to Türkiye.
The response also came from the German foreign minister Annalena Baerbock with the following tweet: “We woke up to terrible news from Turkey and Syria. My thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives in these terrible #earthquakes and those who still fear for their relatives, friends or neighbours. Together with our partners, we stand ready to provide assistance.”
