Newspaper: Turkish intelligence leads Libya to historic reconciliation
The months-long dispute in Tripoli between Libya's Government of National Unity and the armed group Rada has been resolved through a compromise facilitated by Türkiye.
According to the Turkish newspaper Star, the recent visits to Libya by Ibrahim Kalın, director of Türkiye’s National Intelligence Organisation (MIT), played a key role in achieving this outcome.
Sources within the security forces confirmed that the protracted military tensions in the Libyan capital have come to an end through reconciliation.
Turkish intelligence officials engaged extensively with all Libyan factions throughout this process. The dialogue gained momentum following MIT Director Kalın’s visit to Tripoli on June 4.
Under the guidance of Turkish officials, discussions continued until September, culminating on September 13 with an agreement on de-escalation between the rival parties.
The Libyan sides highlighted that they had always believed the resolution could only succeed under Türkiye’s leadership and expressed appreciation for Türkiye’s dedication to maintaining Libya’s unity and stability.
Earlier, on August 25, MIT Director Kalın visited Benghazi in eastern Libya and met with Khalifa Haftar, commander of the country’s eastern armed forces. This marked the first high-level engagement in years between Ankara and the eastern Libyan administration, drawing international attention and signalling Türkiye’s commitment to keeping open communication channels with all principal Libyan actors.
Opinion leaders from both western and eastern Libya expressed strong approval of the visit and publicly thanked President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for prioritising “Libyan unity.”
Observers have noted that Türkiye’s unique position as the only nation trusted by both sides has enhanced its standing on the international stage.
